Emergency Eye Care

At Zacharia Naumann Optometry we set aside time for emergencies.

Should you experience an eye injury, sudden vision loss, unusual symptoms or pain please call us immediately on 02 6971 0044. Attend the emergency centre at your local hospital for after hours care.

Conditions that require immediate care include:

Ocular Foreign Bodies are objects that enter the eye. These may include eyelashes or projectiles from common tasks such as grinding or mowing. Immediate attention is necessary to prevent further damage. In most instances we can remove ocular foreign bodies in our rooms. Safety eyewear should always be worn in the workshop and garden.

Iritis/Uveitis presents with a deep, throbbing eye pain, light sensitivity and redness. The internal inflammation of your eye requires urgent attention as delayed treatment can result in vision loss. Repeated episodes of uveitis/iritis can be linked to inflammatory systemic conditions, such as lupus.

Retinal Detachment is an urgent condition that requires timely care. Symptoms include sudden onset floaters, cobwebbing, flashes of light or shadows in your vision. Quick action will save your vision.

Chemical Injuries should be irrigated with water for 15-30 minutes immediately. This simple step will lessen the long term damage to your vision. Seek medical attention straight away.

Angle Closure Glaucoma occurs when the drainage structure of the eye becomes blocked. The result is a rapid increase in eye pressure that initially has no symptoms. As the pressure escalates eye pain, redness, nausea and vomiting can occur. Prompt treatment with medication will limit optic nerve damage.
